Is it important to talk about how women are treated in the music industry?
The music industry is a hard one to break into as someone who wants to work behind the scenes. It’s especially hard for up and coming women who want to work in the industry that is primarily male dominant. By speaking about how women have been treated to achieve the small amount of success they have, I hope to shine a small light on the issues that need to be addressed in order to start change. Having equal representation of women in the industry would be a major victory for all of those that have worked tirelessly to make a name for themselves.
Hi and welcome to the Music Blog podcast where we discuss all things music from concert experiences to behind-the-scenes industry stories. I’m your host Stephanie and today I’m going to be talking with my friend Rachel about how the music industry is harder to get stared in as a female. Rachel and I met while attending Nimbus, both of us were studying music business management.
Rachel, want to start things off with the only meaningful piece of advice we were given during our time at Nimbus?
If you can remember, at the time, did you think you would take this advice seriously?
Do you think it’s important to have these conversations about female representation in the industry?
What do you think needs to change for women to feel confident and comfortable working alongside these men?
Anything else you would like to add? Last second advice?
Thanks, Rachel, for your time.
Overall, the music industry isn’t very friendly for females who are trying to make a career out of music. Many stories have been told about how venues were insisting that the tour manager was one of the band members boyfriends or that they must not be able to work a sound board because they are a girl. These stories are just the beginning and there needs to be a major shift in the industry to allow women to work comfortably.
